Bortz, Alfred. Meltdown! The Nuclear Disaster in Japan and Our Energy Future. Twenty-First Century Books, 2012.

Ferguson, Charles. Nuclear Energy: What Everyone Needs to Know. Oxford University Press, 2011. (While not a children’s book, it is written in a question and answer format that will work well for middle school students.)

Lusted, Marcia and Greg. A Nuclear Power Plant (Building History series). Lucent Books, 2004.

Mycio, Mary. Wormwood Forest: A Natural History of Chernobyl. Joseph Henry Press, 2005. (An interesting look at the exclusion zone around Chernobyl, including its environmental impact and some surprising ways plants and animals have adapted.)

Nemzer, Marilyn, et al. Energy for Keeps: Creating Clean Electricity from Renewable Resources. Energy Education Group, 2010.

Sheinkin, Steve. Bomb: The Race to Build—and Steal—the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon (Newbery Honor Book). Flashpoint, 2012.
