Reducing Friction

The invention of the wheel was an early and most significant technological breakthrough. (Have students discuss why in terms of friction.) A wheel on an axle still leaves an area of friction, however. Where? Thus, a further reduction of friction is achieved by putting steel balls or rollers between the axle and the wheel. See:
