We have talked about adaptations–that is, features of the organism that help the it survive and reproduce. Importantly, adaptations are both physical and behavioral. The following video describes the distinction using the giraffe as an example:

Have kids consider particular animals common to your region and discuss how their behavior (behavioral adaptations) matches and supports its physical adaptations (body features), and vise versa. To make the point have kids consider, for example, how a squirrel would get along behaving like a beaver–or a beaver trying to behave like a squirrel. Could a hummingbird behave like a robin catching and eating worms, or the other way around (It will likely cause some laughter.) Please post questions that kids ask.
