The idea of using levers in one way or another occurs intuitively to many children–it is seen in a number of nonhuman animals–and undoubtedly goes back in history as far as humans themselves. The first known mathematical description of the principle, however, comes from a Greek man by the name of Archimedes who, following his discovery, wrote: “Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand and I can move the Earth.” The following video provides a story of Archimedes, as well as describing the principle itself.
