The differential heating of the Earth between the equator and the poles provides the basis for a single major convection current. However, the size of the Earth results in this current actually breaking into three parts as shown in the following video. Then the rotation of the Earth, ocean and land areas, and topographical features make for numerous complicating factors that are responsible for day to day changes in weather as will be addressed in future lessons.
