Much scientific research has shown that plants can be grown perfectly well by supplying roots with the required amounts of mineral nutrients (nitrigen, phosphorus, potassium, etc.) in a well aerated, water solution. The following videos show hydroponic systems presently in operation.
There are numerous additional videos you might watch. Have students discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of hydroponic farming.
