For city and household use, water is withdrawn from a lake, river, or ground water and treated as shown in the following video to assure that it is save to drink, i.e., free toxins and/or disease causing organisms. Note: there is some variation among municipal water treatment plants, but the basic steps and objective (safe drinking water) remain the same.
