      There are so called carnivorous plants, plants that capture and digest insects and other small animals. Like other plants, they still rely on sunlight and photosynthesis for their basic growth; note their green leaf-like parts. They use captured insects for essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. Thus, they are able to grow on nutrient poor soils that preclude other plants.
