      The major waste from energy metabolism (oxidation of food particles) is carbon dioxide, which is given off through the lungs in the course of breathing (see respiration video, above). There are other sorts of wastes, however, that will not go off as a gas. Therefore, the body has a means of dispelling them in water solution–urination. The organs responsible for this are the kidneys. See the following video for a simplified overview of kidneys and kidney function. Have kids note the specialized structures of which there are many thousands–a capillary bed within a cup-like funnel. In these structures, water with wastes in solution is squeezed out of the blood into the cup and makes its way toward final urination.
