A material, e.g., salt or sugar, goes into solution as each ion or molecule of the material becomes surrounded by water molecules. This occurs via +, –  attractions between water molecules and ions or molecules of the material.  Thus, a solution consists of each atom/molecule of the dissolved material being totally surrounded by water molecules as illustrated in the following video. Please post questions that kids ask.
